Here are some tips to make getting an interview easier for you. <strong>Lesson #1 </strong>Know the company you are applying to. What I mean by this is, you will have to judge the reader of your resume and cover letter and whom you should gear your cover letter and resume for. In a large business, generally a couple of hundred employees and up, your resume is usually screened strictly on qualifications pertaining to the job. Most large companies use software that turns your resume into text and then parses for keywords. <strong>**hint-hint**</strong> Try and use as many keywords from the advertisement as possible, while still making sense as part of your cover letter and resume. For medium and small companies the odds are much lower that they are using the screening software as the cost is prohibitive. This gives you the best chance to make a good impression right off the bat as an actual person is going to be looking at your resume and cover letter. Still follow the keyword advice but tailor it as if you were speaking directly with the hiring manager, Vice President, or even the CEO. In small business many times one person will look it over and if it impresses them the VP or hiring manager will take a look. The goal is to have your resume and cover letter in those hands and to make a good impression while it is there. In lesson 2 I will cover some of the various techniques for cover letters.
